If Basilicata’s Aglianico del Vulture DOC is today emerging as one of Italy’s winemaking areas of greatest potential, much of the credit must go to the D’Angelo family. The estate was instrumental in garnering international recognition for the wine through its determination to have serious consumers recognize Aglianico as one of Italy’s most important varieties. With growing sites positioned in the town of Rionero, high on the slopes of Mount Vulture, the D’Angelo clan was inspired by its unique location. They set about making the best wine they could out of a grape variety in which they truly believed: Aglianico. The D’Angelo cantina introduced international varieties to the region, as well as French-oak barrique aging. Success and recognition soon followed, and for decades D’Angelo has been widely considered one of the key estates in Italian winemaking. Rocco D’Angelo, a talented young winemaker with a strong desire to build on the family’s legacy, has assumed stewardship and looks forward to many successful vintages on Vulture.
